| Dear All Customers , We received alot of questions over the last few weeks regarding noodles sold over the internet and in some asian stores that have little to no calories and carbs. We have just received a response from our nutritional team, below is their response. These noodles contain Glucomannan (the main ingredient) which is a highly viscous insoluble fibre derived from the konjac plant. It is extremely hard to break down and digest within the body and therefore claims have been made that when you consume this product, you will not absorb any carbohydrates or kilojoules (calories). There are also claims of this product’s great health benefits but there is not enough reliable research available to support these claims. Glucomannan is used as a gel, gum or flour. Often used as an emulsifier or thickener E425 (ii). Glucomannan has been used in traditional Asian foods such as noodles, tofu and heat stable gel products. However, there are restrictions for its use in Australia after a string of deaths internationally, associated with its use in a confectionary. Currently it is not banned if it is the main ingredient as in the case of the noodles, although it is still heavily monitored by Customs. We recognise that it is each customer’s personal choice as to whether they would like to consume Glucomannan containing products. However, until more reliable information presents, the Tony Ferguson Weightloss Program does not recommend the use of products such as Glucomannan containing noodles (Shirataki), as we cannot guarantee that there are no calories or carbohydrates absorbed and due to the safety concerns.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Kind Regards, Shorty - Tony Ferguson Staff Weightloss Practitioner Maintenance Consultant
