What a great Mum hey! She lost 15kgs earlier this year on TF and she was starting to worry about my weight, so she suggested I give it a go and she would pay for it. To be honest I could not afford it on my own - as I am not working at the moment and it already costs us a fortune to feed our family of four. I think if I were single it would work out cheaper than buying my lunch each day at work... It probably depends on individual circumstances as to whether people find it expensive or not.

RE: Is it really that expensive?
~~Mountain-Maiden~~ (4/11/2009)
wholey dooley sandra, save those pennies and move to aust
vixxen, you can grow fruit veges in pots :) or at least some of them, strawberrys are good in hanging pots, and lettuce, cabbage, shallots, fruit trees, herbs, all sorts of things - unless of course she wont let you have pots of plants or even hanging pots
Nope no pots, hanging pots....nada!!! :doze:

RE: Is it really that expensive?

wholey dooley sandra, save those pennies and move to aust

vixxen, you can grow fruit veges in pots :) or at least some of them, strawberrys are good in hanging pots, and lettuce, cabbage, shallots, fruit trees, herbs, all sorts of things - unless of course she wont let you have pots of plants or even hanging pots

RE: Is it really that expensive?
sandradeee (4/11/2009)

Vixxsin ~ Take 2 ~ (4/11/2009)

Sarah Darling (4/11/2009)
Really? (like i said I am VERY fussy when it comes to meats) I am almost tempted to buy direct from a farm and get half a cow and get them to chop it up....u can do that for about $150-200 and they cut it into roasts, chops, sausages etc. (sorry to the vegetarians out there lol)

Also like you i find it more convenient shopping in the one place instead of galavanting across the countryside to shop at different places.

I'll sort myself out one way or another....lol....just not used to the lack of customer service and fresh produce up here in Brissie compared to what I have been used to in the past....my local butcher in Adelaide has been kicking around for bout 30 years I think...i remember going in there getting cuts of deli meats and that. He was the butcher that you could talk to for hours...and he cuts up ALL your meat fresh. Nothing pleased me more seeing that carcass come out, the cleaver ripping into the flesh and bones....and then mum making a delicious meal out of it with all the fresh veggies she grew in the backyard.

RE: Is it really that expensive?

thanks vixxsin.

We have farmers markets near us (chandler) but I don't go all that often as i find it painful to do some shopping at woolies, then the butcher then go every sunday to the markets as well.

Our grocery bill is normally in excess of $200 which includes meat and all fruit/vege etc, but excludes nappies, but this is feeding 2 adults and two 2 year olds and covers b/fast, lunch & dinners and snacks. And for me I have been eating caulirice and broccoli every night, and eat sausages most nights (its cheap) So I cook additional veggies for my son and cook different meats for him so that at least one of us in the family can eat right and have variety. Normally when being off TF I would eat the same as my partner, curry and rice, 2min mi goreng noodles...really cheap, yet fattening stuff. So yeah buying more fresh things (for my diet) has increased my food bill. Like i said my son and making sure he eats a healthy balanced diet is more important than what I shove down my throat. He is #1 and I buy all the stuff he needs before I go and get stuff for me and my partner.
This week I have planned my main meals so that my 18mo can have the same as me. I might actually be able to eat something besides sausages....hoorah. it just means my food bill will be even higher. Mine is normally $200+ for the 3 of us. That includes nappies, formula etc.
Like sandy said, the fruit and veg bills are expensive....its not cheap these days, and because i would eat maybe 1 cup and have to now increase to 3 cups + a day plus fruit for me. Its more expensive.

RE: Is it really that expensive?
Having to cook seperate meals for me, my partner and toddler has meant food bills have increased by about $20-50 a week
May I ask why you prepare different meals for them?

I have a dh and two 2 year olds and they eat the same foods for dinner as me (of course I omit the carbs on my plate and dish up more vege), but generally speaking there is no different purchases just for them.

Sorry Vixxsin for the pry!...just quite curious

RE: Is it really that expensive?

hey sandy, how do you make your own fibre???

RE: Is it really that expensive?

I don't find it expensive at all.

I make my own fibre which is a lot cheaper.

the only thing I find expensive is the fruit and vege shopping. Which is significantly under what I was spending previously. I'd buy breakfast at work $5, I'd have lunch at work $8, I'd buy dinner for myself and my roommate $20... By the end of the week I'd spent about $200 on food! And then I'd go drinking of a weekend and probablly spend another $50!

All up, The diet is cheaper. Much cheaper.

RE: Is it really that expensive?

I dont think it is all that expensive. yes the vitamens, fibre and chromium make it expensive to start off with, but, if you divide the cost by the length of time you have them its not expensive at all. Its under $50 a week but, if you add up the cost of take out, nuts (for me lol), sweets, cappicinnos, etc, then really its probably cheaper.

Ohh i should add too, that yes i have a family who eat a lot, but they eat healthy. We have not had to sacrific too much (except my cappiccinos (wahhhhhhhhh i love them) . But i tell you what, i go to the shop, and i see all these other kids throwing tantrums and winging cause they want this ice cream, or sweet, or whatever, and my kids say ohhh mum, look nectarines can we get some -- all have my kids have been like that, and so we have really saved because our kids dont want the junky foods, so we dont have it here.

I also figure, i gave up smoking so i have saved this family a carton of ciggies a week, and i dont drink, dont smoke, dont do anything illegal, dont play the pokies, and if i want to spend the money on myself that i have saved, well, no one would want to say a word to me about me spoiling me lol.................

its my time lol

RE: Is it really that expensive?

For me its been a little more expensive...only because what I was eating prior was coming to around $1-2 a serve for brekkie/lunches....also I am now buying more fresh fruit and vegetables than I did previously as I would let my toddler have all the good fresh foods and me and the other half would eat the cheap stuff (rice and curries etc) Having to cook seperate meals for me, my partner and toddler has meant food bills have increased by about $20-50 a week...that might not seem like much but as we are both on Centrelink benefits (my partner studies full time, and im a stay at home mum)...it makes it very difficult.

Is it really that expensive?

I hear/read that tf is so expensive and a primary reason that some stop the program.

Have you found it to be expensive?

I know for me it hasn't been. I did expect it to be, but have found i am actually coming in on my weekly food budget or saving!

I'd contribute this to smaller portions and less consumption of food in general - plus I am planning our meals and not overbuying.
