I've got a cupboard full of these at the moment. I find them really handy because I'm hopeless with portion control and find it a chore to cook a meal NORMALLY, so having the patience to wait 1 minute while it gets nuked is no worry.
They're preserved the way meals are kept in ration packs. Basically because all of the air is sucked out there's no way for the food to degrade as there's no contact with anything that might cause it to go off, including air. It's a perfectly safe way of preserving food (the military has been doing it for yonks) and you don't have to worry that you'll have something in the fridge that might go off.
I love them, I find the meat a bit strange because whilst it tears apart like a piece of rabbit that's been stewed for 5 days, the fibres are a little tough. So it's extremely tender... But not. If that makes any sense lol.
As a person who's lived on many different versions of ration packs and dehydrated meals at times, I can tell you right now that they're the tastiest vac-packed meals I've ever eaten. The biggest problem that I've found is that they don't contain enough protein for a male's daily serve. I mentioned that to my consultant yesterday because DH is on the diet as well, and she said they're looking into it. The meals are 200g, however they're only 50% meat which means there is only 50% of a man's daily intake of protein in it.
She did mention that people who are on the meals tend to loose weigh faster not only because of the portion control, but because there is less protein in them and you loose muscle mass. So for men it's something to be aware of, but as a women *shrug* not too fussed! Lol.
Heads up though, I don't know if it's the same for every clinic but my clinic has a 2 for $10 sale on them at the moment. I saved $35 yesterday when I was buying more because of it and was tempted to go back to get more while they were cheaper! In fact DH gets paid today, I might just do that...
