| Hello people, I started my maintenance on Saturday 20 June. I am on 1 shake a day program. I had my fibre, had my fruits, had rice and vegies in the afternoon and usual proteing meal at night. I am feeling so constipated, it drives me nuts So I had an extra fruit serve tonight, an orange as I read that it has a high fibre content. And am keeping on eating the "Jols" sugarfree Pastilles hoping it would give me the laxative effect!!!! Is this normal? what do people do to overcome this problem? I don't really want to take any oral laxatives Am worried that I would get used to it and can't do it without it etc. Help me out please Emma

| Try 5 prunes, soaked in hotwater and allow to sit overnight, eat the fruit with your cereal or on their own and also drink the juice that has come from them, keep having this or stewed apple or pear with a sweetener....if this doesn't work you will have to stoop to laxatives, use blackmores peritone following the instructions on the bottle... I hope your pipes unclog soon XX

Thanks for your speedy reply Mally! Always helpful I thought of prunes but would I need to cut down on one of my fruit serves if I have those? That was what worried me. I also saw in my meal plan worked out by my consultant that I can have the rolled oats and special K. Can we have Uncle Toby's instant oats? and is that Kellog's Special K? Please advise me. Emma

| make sure you're still drinking at least 6-8 glasses of plain water a day..... probably would be good to use them as your fruit for the day, you could have them anytime you like really.... The rolled oats are much better for you but the instant ones are would be ok now and again,...special K would be fine but remember there is a list in your maintenance book that will list the best options, that doesn't mean you can't have something else just watch the GI....try and keep things 55 and under for optimum results... The glycemic index range is as follows: Low GI = 55 or less Medium GI = 56 - 69 High GI = 70 or more |

Thanks for those tips Mally I bought some instant oats today. The carb content is very much similar for the the rolled oats :O But dunno about the GI count. I'll give it a go. Emma

| found this info....... I bought myself a box of Uncle Toby's Quick Oats (Ingredients: Oats) recently, and they are identical to their Traditional Oats. ie. nutrition panel and ingredients are exactly the same. The only difference, I think, is that the Traditional's are whole oats, whereas the Quick's are somewhat crushed. So, why the difference in GI?
Somewhat crushed oats allows digestive enzymes to attach to more of the surface of the oats. Therefore more glucose is released in a shorter time frame giving a higher GI.
They are both good though, so don't be too concerned about it.
