Hi Everyone

I have paint and determined to get started on my outside windowledges/etc.

Q. Can I give them a quick sand and paint over, or do I reallly really need to prime?

I loathe painting, and all about the 'quick fix' if it works :O)

You just need to make sure that you remove any loose paint and all dirt, so a quick sand if they are in pretty good nick. If you have big cracks in paintwork you will need to sand them out.

How long since it has been painted San - if it is under 5 years then you are usually fine with a quick sand and then get into it.

You will only need primer on new timber or if you are changing the type of paint you use - eg if you are using an acrylic based paint and you want to go over an oil based paint. Or if you are using a really light colour and the colour that is on there is dark.

i think it's been along while - there's alot of flakey paint, but they are solid.

Window frames are currently a nasty funny green and I want them to be cream with a dark brown strip along the bottom. Hmmm, maybe I do need to prime to get the right colour effect then.

I 'assume' they are enamel being outside, but who really knows?  How can you tell?   I have water based enamel exterior paint to put on them.

Not loving the idea, but I know they will look so much better.

This is the nasty colour they are now....the actual french door you see here will be chocolate, but the windows will be cream and then the strip along the bottom.... Probably take me until 2020 hehe

- awe just noticed this one has my old bronsen cat in RIP Bronsi

OK if you are going from dark colour to light colour you will need primer, unless you get a paint that has primer in it (they can be purchased). But you will need a few coats to cover the dark colour.

Sand it so it is smooth and there are no big cracks in the paint then paint. You can hire a sander from hire places and this will make life so easy and do it in a quarter of the time than doing it by hand.

If it is enamel than you really should use enamel again. It is one paint that other paints don't go over well.

Thanks Jodes - I've got myself a little sander and the paint is enamel.  Is the rule, enamel will go over water, but water won't sit on enamel?  something like that.

Anyhoo - thanks for that - Looks like I need to get primer before I get cracking then.

- day of repairs, my letterbox is drying out on the lawn - I'm going to attach it to my fence so the little hoods can't pull it off!

Haha - the beginning is usually a good place to start, but I often start somewhere in the middle and miss the prep (I know it's there, but avoid wherever possible!)

No dad, brothers or boyfriend (right now), kinda have no choice but to do these things :O)

  • Sounds like you have a USEFUL hubby at that. Many are not, so I hear
