HEY GUYS...

WELL i'VE BEEN ON TONY FERGUSON FOR A FEW OF MONTHS AND HAVE LOST NEARLY NINE KILOS WHICH i'VE BEEN HAPPY ABOUT BECAUSE I HAVE FALLEN OFF THE WAGON A FEW TIMES....

i'VE NOTICED EATING COMFORT FOOD IS AN AUTOMATIC RESPONSE AS A RESULT OF STRESS.....

E.G THE TIMES I HAVE BUSTED HAVE BEEN AROUND LOTS  OF UNI ASSESSMENTS, WORK RESPONSIBILITIES, WHEN I'VE BEEN FEELING ANXIOUS ABOUT MYSELF...

CAN ANYBODY RELATE???AND IF SO..DOES ANYBODY HAVE SOME SOUND ADVICE THEY CAN GIVE TO THIS EMOTIONAL EATER???
i LOOK FORWARD TOHEARING FROM YOU GUYS!!!!

Oh yeah, stress makes me do all sorts of things.  Ironically, when I'm stressed, I don't exercise because "I'm too stressed out" which essentially is an excuse because exercise it probably the best thing for me!

Stress usually results in me reaching for a glass of wine or two, which usually results in me making a poor food decision for dinner and really slows down my weight loss too.

Lately my strategy has been to try and identify stress and look at the ways I've been handling it.  I'm looking forward to reading some other responses too

I have 2 different stresses - daily stresses that aren't huge I reach for comfort foods - stodgy and substantial or if it's premenstrual crankiness I want sweet (normally I'm a savoury girl).

If there is a massive stress, like a trauma type stress I go the opposite and don't eat much for days, just as damaging weight wise cos we all know that doesn't last and slows the old metabolism down even more.

They say stress is a killer and I'd be suprised if there was anyone on this forum that does not "medicate" with food when stressed.

Many people without weight problems medicate with food when it comes to stress too.

stress triggers the release of cortisol (a hormone that is used in the fight or flight response). Cortisol also makes your body stop burning fat.

Google Cortisol and weight loss and have a read - it is a nightmare

I've read that too Jodes - which always leaves me wondering, if it's chemical, how is it that when some people get stressed they lose weight... dramatically?   I have many 'skinny' friends who get ridiculously thing and gaunt when stressed.

Seems there are two types of people out there

  1. Those who get busy and forget to eat
  2. And those who reach for the yummies - gosh, wonder which one I am hehe

What about ensuring you only have the good foods within reach if your going througha  stressful time (such as sad, exams etc), if your an angry stressed (such as really peeved off with something) what about utalising it and going for  a brisk walk, or run, punching a punching bag, putting on a dvd or the wii and doing a workout, maybe even going to the gym or an aerobics class.
