Ahh, That's probablly the difference. Because I only have to buy little bits of everything, because I'm only feeding me!

ohh vixxen see if you can go to a growers own, or a fruit shop -- i got cauli's the other day for 79c each, bananas 2.99 conti cucumbers 1.00 each, tomatos 99c kg, eggplant 3.99kg, mushies are about 8.00kg, but i always pick them without the stems (yep i am one of those horrible people who leave stems in the box) and i never buy more then what i will use in a few days. Cabbage was about 2.50 a head (and they were huge). Asparagus was 1.99 a bunch, celery was 1.60, beans about 5kg, snap peas 5kg, sprouts 2.99kg. fruit well, i go for whatever is on special  -- these were all at a fruit shop on sunday, as growers on wasnt open.  I also buy potatos for the rest of the family and get them on special 5kg for 5.99 or a 10kg sack for $8, pumpkin, i buy from the farmers -- and anything else i can get off them lol

i also look up where i live, theres only one store, and on different days they have differnt things on special, so i take advantage of that, and walk down there to pick the specials up

I also buy frozen spinach, brussel sprouts (yummmmmmmm), cauli and broccoli (if it works out to be cheaper), aussie stir fry mix, country harvest winter veges mix, and i always have frozen, beans corn, onion etc, just in case (yep i buy frozen cut onions cause i have two little girls who like peeling onions and rubbin their eyes after)

The price you are paying for bananas i would want the skin to be at least gold plated -- thats really really expensive

and i aint happy atm, cause stonefruits are coming into season and i dont think we can have any wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Oh my, so cheap!!! I live in a yuppy area....thats why its so expensive...because they can afford to have prices so high, grates me. You know I really miss Adelaide, its so cheap and the produce is just so superior to QLD. Even the meats are fresher and better. Can you tell I am home sick??

I am thinking of going to a farmers market like i used to do in adelaide but dont know any close by to where I live.

what area are you in? There are markets down there, what about going there?

Where do you do your shopping??? I dont ever get my meat or veges from woolies or places like that, always from the butcher and the grocer -- they are mostly cheaper also and the food is so much fresher

The best meat i have ever eatten and bought comes from beerwah meats on the sunshine coast, those guys are the absolute best (i know you are miles from there)

thanks vixxsin.

We have farmers markets near us (chandler) but I don't go all that often as i find it painful to do some shopping at woolies, then the butcher then go every sunday to the markets as well.

Our grocery bill is normally in excess of $200 which includes meat and all fruit/vege etc, but excludes nappies, but this is feeding 2 adults and two 2 year olds and covers b/fast, lunch & dinners and snacks. My dh probably buys once a week at work and we barely eat out now that I can't!

20/10/09 79.5kg starting weight
26/10/09 1.8kg loss = current weight 77.7kg
02/11/09 1.1kg loss - current weight 76.6kg

09/11/09 0.3kg loss - current weight 76.3kg

GOAL 65KG

Phew ok so my grocery bill being $200 including nappies etc...isnt too bad then....i wish i could do it for $150 but thats pushing it.

I do shop at woolies...only because I dont like the butchers in our area..they are dodgier than the supermarket chains..go figure... (like i said I am VERY fussy when it comes to meats) I am almost tempted to buy direct from a farm and get half a cow and get them to chop it up....u can do that for about $150-200 and they cut it into roasts, chops, sausages etc. (sorry to the vegetarians out there lol)

Also like you i find it more convenient shopping in the one place instead of galavanting across the countryside to shop at different places.

I'll sort myself out one way or another....lol....just not used to the lack of customer service and fresh produce up here in Brissie compared to what I have been used to in the past....my local butcher in Adelaide has been kicking around for bout 30 years I think...i remember going in there getting cuts of deli meats and that. He was the butcher that you could talk to for hours...and he cuts up ALL your meat fresh. Nothing pleased me more seeing that carcass come out, the cleaver ripping into the flesh and bones....and then mum making a delicious meal out of it with all the fresh veggies she grew in the backyard.

I don't think it's crazy priced, but I do believe it's more expensive than "just eating right".

TF is about $80 a week over here in NZ, before you buy chromium/fibre/vitamins/sugarfree treats fruit and vege...for one person, I think that's alot - would be about $120 with all the other stuff added.

Compared to grocery bill of fruit/vege/seafood for around $70-$80 inclusive for me and my dog.

  • I have a friend who shops for 2 adults 2 kids for $150pw.  She also has 2 dogs and 3 cats!!!   And another mate who shops for 1 adult/2 kids and says it costs her over $200 regardlesss.....

Bargains are there if you hunt them down, but you do have to look :O)

Really? I find vege shopping REALLY cheap! I bought a mountain of vegetables yesterday, which all up cost me $22 and essentially, I was spending that on junk food a week!

Hmm well I dont know if its the area i am living in...but mushrooms are $10 a kilo, cauliflowers were nearly $3 each!!..bananas $5/k and so on....and buying for 3 people, and knowing i have to have 3 cups of veggies a day it adds up very quick.

Have you thought of getting a small vege box... you don't need much room to grow and abundance of  tomatoes/lettuce/spring onions to make basic salads :O)

I did in the past at my old place....but I live in my mother in laws house and its a 'show' home and she doesnt want anything to taint that. Not even a portable one that I could take away with me when we move *sigh*, one day.

My dream is to own a little hobby farm. *dreams away*

wholey dooley sandra, save those pennies and move to aust

vixxen, you can grow fruit veges in pots or at least some of them, strawberrys are good in hanging pots, and lettuce, cabbage, shallots, fruit trees, herbs, all sorts of things - unless of course she wont let you have pots of plants or even hanging pots
