Hi everyone,

Have had a migraine for the last 2 days and I'm trying to find something to alleviate it apart from using medicine etc.  I don't mind having panadol/nurofen etc, but I need something stronger as these dont work, and the stronger drugs all have codeine which make me very sick, so I can't have them!

So my question is, what do you do when you have migraines to stop them?

I'm off to the doctors tomorrow to see what they suggest

THanks everyone

Hey kat, make sure you drink lots of water, but if i have a migraine and its set it, the doc gives me naramig -- i was in a test program many years ago, as its not specifically for migrains but they found overseas that it helped get rid of it.  I user to always get them, but i havent had one (yes i am touching wood) for a long time now.

Well i can have a migraine, and be at the 'i cant see, im throwing up stage' and within 20mins of me taking a naramig tablet, the migraine has gone right down, and within an hour all the symptoms are completely gone.  The only side effect i get is a very dry mouth, and i have to drink loads and loads of water as i get an incrediable thurst.

Its a governement autho pack i get (theres only 2 in the pack) and they have to make sure you can take it, and ask a series of questions, and check, like blood pressure etc.  You can only take 1 tablet per 24 hours (i have only ever needed to take 1 per migraine).  Apprently there is also a bottle of naramig tablets too you can get the doc to prescribe, but i dont know if the ones i take are stronger, as i only get the box with just 2 in it.

It might be worth your while asking about it, as it does work like i have said.  I know my ex mil cant take them, as shes on some medication that interfers with them, but others i know i told about have got them and they worked exactly the same way for them.

Ohh i should add naramig is covered on a hcc, and the box of 2 i get, i think last time cost me about $20ish

I had accupuncture for about a year and it has been fantastic. I now get a headache/migraine every few weeks instead of 80% of the time.

I also believe that all the water TF makes me drink has also contributed to the reduction in frequency and severity.

oh god - this topic was made for me!!!

firstly - to anyone that suffers - you have my sympathy and to anyone that says they're just headaches "get over it!"

I suffer horrendous 3 day-ers - staying hydrated definately helps - I get the aura - where I see zig zags ....my left eye shuts off after that- tongue and nose goes numb - then the killer headache starts - then the vomiting - I now take Immigran tabs - from the docs only - 2 tablets in a pack - ($24) - you get two packs (4 tablets on a script) - but worth the money -

pain relief wise nurofen plus or mersyndol work for me .....but you mainly need to sleep it off in a dark room.........

my doctor has had good feedback also from people injecting botox into their foreheads - on either side of a nerve - (can't remember the name)......

good luck x

I'm the same...

I cant take codeine... Tho when they are the worst and I'm crying from the pain, I will risk the effects and take one..

However, I have found an ice-pak on the back of the neck, right at the base of the skull, really helps.. laying on it and sleeping it off.. The ice restricts blood flow to the head (too much blood not being circulated and building up is what causes the migraines), so it eases that off..

Hope that helps

Botox works, it's pricey but will work as most migraines come from tension.

  • If you don't want to go there, I take Nurofen Migraine and send myself to bed in a dark room.

I have suffered from migraines for most of my life. I have tried everything that is available over the counter and none of it works. I hav kept a migraine diary to try to work out if it is food, activity or anything that contributes to mine but there is no common link at all.

I often get tired, then see aura. At this stage I take Zomig tablets - 1 first and another in about half an hour if the first one did not kick in. If this does not work and I did not take the Zomig in time, I usually end up vomiting and cannot stand light or noise. At this stage the only thing that works is a trip to the hospital and a couple of injections for pain and anti vomiting meds. They usually let me go in about half an hour but have been known to keep me there for a good few hours if they are not happy with my blood pressure (it always goes right up when I get a migraine - very common)...

I have tried many things including accupuncture, botox and raw honey - still the only thing that works is the zomig or pethadine and maxalon...

Mersyndol (night strength with the calmative) was my best friend when I got Migraines
