Thats ok Jodes...I was just merely stating a point that with the economy at the moment, and living up in QLD which has the highest unemployment rate, people are fighting for jobs and taking pay cuts. I also think employers are taking advantage of that and setting really low hourly rates. I honestly wouldnt go for jobs less than $20/h either...lol

I totally agree with you (as I said above) that $20 an hour is an appalling rate for a contractor. But also I think if people with lack of experience would snap something like this up as it looks like they dont look at your work history and background.

Going from being a PA to doing temp work I took a drastic pay cut, but at the same time when I was pregnant no-one wanted to hire me. Also the positive thing about it was going from private to public sector, I was looked after better, my bosses were brilliant and everyday they appreciated my work. It was really refreshing. MY job at the Attorneys still is being temped out - they have asked me to come back and work there permanently (though now I am in a different state), but they said there will always be a job for me should I choose to go back home.

I have been out of work for nearly 2 years now and I am scared out of my mind to go back to work, and to be honest I dont know if I can go back to work full time, nor have the mental capability to work in an office job. Maybe I am just too hard on myself and my abilities. I have worked full time since completing high school in 1997, so taking 2 years off has been a rewarding, yet also a frightening experience as I am worried my career will be stagnant. But at the same time family is now more important to me then working long hours to make good money.

I would love to be able to set up my own business but I dont have the financial backing for it.

I am a stay at home mum and my partner has been studying and is now unemployed, so money has been extremelly tight.

Working from home would be ideal, but I dont know where to start looking for data entry work that I could do so if you could please Jodes lead me in the direction I would be forever grateful.

Thanks Huffy, that is interesting... I had just never heard of a recruitment company wanting a fee for finding you a job (it is usually the employer that pays for this service - instead of advertising, they just go through recruitment agencies)

Vixxsin, I am sure you are being to hard on yourself... 2 years is not that long to be out of the workforce.

When I was studying to become an accountant, we had 2 small kids and I worked full time in retail as a manager for Coles and then I worked for Franklins - it is hard but if your OH is not working, maybe you could work part time in a casual position and study for something you would really like to do?? In my last year of study I got a job as the internal accountant for a national body in the finance industry and then I went to work for an accounting firm as the junior but honestly within 1 year I was doing so much more than a junior and being paid accordingly (I had a great boss)...

When studying, if you can get a job in the industry you are studying in, often your employer will foot the bill for your study and give you time off too (especially in bigger company's). Public service positions or casual employment with local councils are another good option as they will give you time to study as well...

With a PA background, you really do have a great start for any sort of business degree/finance/management...

I know it is hard but jump in and you honestly won't look back

I emailed them to see if positions were only available to Australian Residents or would NZ'rs be eligible.

They sent me an email about talking to immigration etc. for visa's ... They didn't seem to understand the actual question which didn't give me much faith in their services.

I emailed back again and explained that visa's etc. are non required by NZ citizens and my question was are the roles they have available available outside of Australia and they said yes they are available to NZ and Australian citizens.

I guess $25AUD isn't alot of money to register, but I'm reluctant that there will be some terms and conditions in the site that I cant see as a non-registered member that dictates you must be an Australian resident.

My understanding is you become an employee of the employer you apply to.  They are generally not contracting positions.

Jodes, I'd agree with you $20 an hour isn't much if you need to pay tax, but I think that is paid by your employer. Admin is a very wide term and can mean anything from basic data-entry unexperienced admin (i.$16 per hour) to senior executive assistant ($30-$35per hour).

I wouldn't get up for $20 an hour either.  I tried that end of last year for a temp role.  By the time I had paid for my petrol costs ($100) I was onlyh $15 better off than on the unemployment benefit - and I as chose to buy lunch, I guess I was worse off in the end lol.

edit - it was a part-time role, incase anyone's thinking our benefit is massive lol.  But petrol there and back whether you work 8 hours or 4 is the same of course.  Kept me in 'the force' but $ wise was not beneficial.
